Yesterday I was saddened by the news that Joe Simon had passed away. The first thing I did after reading the news was start to work on this tribute to his memory.

For those of you who don't know, Joe Simon was one of the great golden age writers and artists in comic books, a pioneer of the trade. He and his partner in awesome Jack Kirby created some of the greatest comics I've read.

As I begun this tribute I was trying to chose which of his characters to include (I may, at some point, still redo this to add all of his characters) the project started changing. It was becoming more than a tribute to Joe Simon but also to his friend and partner in comics, Jack Kirby (whom died in 1994), and became to feature only the characters they created together. Simon and Kirby were one of my favourite teams to work on comic books and are probably best know for creating Captain America.

From Left to Right, the characters are:
The Fighting American (a personal favourite of mine)
The Guardian
Captain America
Stuntman
Lancelot Strong (the Shield)

Just looking at Captain America, the Fighting American and Lancelot Strong, you can see the true nature of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, They were Patriots who loved their country and as such I think it's fitting that as I type this I am listening to this [link] A song from the big screen adaptation of one of their best known works, Captain America. I feel this song exemplified their spirit when creating their works, the good Captain in particular.

A good collection of their works together can be found in "the Simon & Kirby Superheroes" featuring heroes that I didn't include here such as the vagabond prince or the fly and I say it's well worth a read.
